Something Borrowed Series: Tailor Made Teaching: “App” it Out
Hello, everyone! I am so happy to help Jen with her Something Borrowed Series. If you do not know me, I am Britney from Tailor-made Teaching. I am a 20-something year old Ohioan currently teaching first grade for my second year (lots of numbers in that sentence). I do not take the responsibility of a first grade teacher lightly. In many ways, I find my role as a teacher not only to help young children fall in love with math, reading, social studies, science, and so on… but also to balance out the ins and outs of daily classroom living. Yes… I say “living” because my tasks and duties remind me much of my own apartment living. Communication with parents, collaboration with peers, routine learning, and continuous classroom cleaning.
Here is a visual of me… Britney. Yes, I sometimes take pictures of my face and post them on Instagram @tailormadeteaching because it is fun! I love the #instacommunity in every way, shape, and form. I never want to be that blogger or instablogger that is afraid to show their face. So here… is my one-eyed face, smiley face, smirky face, and mugshot face. (:
Originally, I was planning on sharing information about Math Workshop. I would never want to promote or post something that was not a complete success in my classroom. I switched my Math Workshop midyear to a completely new math routine, in which I plan to share someday soon on my blog. Back to reality… I decided to share with you my two favorite apps (one completely new to me and one app that I know extremely well).
Book Wizard is a tool I have used on the internet for quite some time now, but I just found out that it is a full-blown app! I am so excited to share this with parents as they can easily create an account and look up “just right” books for their children. This app will certainly come in handy for any parent interested in finding a leveled book at the store, library, or home!
I don’t know about you… but I am thrilled to have this app handy and ready to use! As Common Core pushes the use of Lexile Measures, I find this app to be a perfect quick-check to find out Lexile levels.
Remind 101 is the app that I have been using all school year! I love this app because it is a great way to communicate with parents, which truly takes no time at all. I like to send quick reminders and updates to parents without seeming annoying. This app does just that! I can send out reminders and schedule them ahead of time too.
I am assuming the reason this app limits the numbers of characters you type is due to the message acceptance from other phones (not everyone has an iphone, in which you can send a billion characters to). You can also send messages to three or more parents. I hope you enjoyed this “App it Out” themed post. Teach and app on!
