When I first started teaching first grade, I inherited many MathStart books.  They are perfect for introducing new math concepts.  Betcha is a story of two boys who use their estimation skills “in real life” to win a contest!

You can easily extend the learning by having your own estimation jar contest in class…that was one of my favorite memories of my first grade year.
While this next books is technically a chapter book, it makes a great read aloud.  I think it’s so important to read chapter books aloud to primary students because it shows them that chapter books can be just as engaging as picture books!

The Candy Corn Contest is about so much more than estimation, it’s also about reading and doing the right thing.  It’s the perfect read aloud for October!  Plus, it will go perfect with that estimation jar you already put out with the first book. 😉
Is it really fall if you don’t “dissect” a pumpkin in class?  How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin not only touches estimation, it talks about skip counting too!

After reading the book and cutting into a pumpkin, your class can estimate the number of seeds inside and then skip count to find the real number!  Math, science, and reading…all in one!Hop on over to Ramona Recommends to see upper grade suggestions:
