Money Madness!

I cringe every year as we open our Money Unit…
{you can see what I did last year here}
This year, with the help of some of my favorite blogging buddies, I didn’t hate it all that much & my kids did better than ever!
Here are some resources and helpful hints that could change your life {like they did mine} 🙂
“Pretty Money”
{how to make counting coins easier}
Each eyelash is worth “5” {so the students can count by 5’s}.
a nickel gets 1 eyelash for 5 cents
a dime gets 2 eyelashes for 10 cents
a quarter gets 5 eyelashes for 25 cents
pennies get crossed out and counted as 1’s
I have my students label the coins with “eyelashes” then they can count by 5’s through all the coins {except pennies}.
I found this a lot easier than having the kids have to switch between 25’s, 10’s, 5’s, & 1’s.
& the kids love making “pretty money” {even the boys!}
Coin Attributes
{Coins in My Hand}
a silly song about the coins and their attributes
{Hey Honey Bunny}
another silly song about coin amounts
{Money Attributes-Fredia Shumway, Frogs in First}
These are great posters and cut/pastes for learning and recognizing coins!
Activities/TpT Finds
{It’s All About the Money-Amy Lemons, Step into Second Grade}

Amy’s “It’s All About the Money” is the best activities unit I’ve seen yet!

{attributes of coins flip book}
{Counting Coins Pocket Book, sorting amounts of coins}

{I Have, Who Has…-Jason Perez, Jason’s Online Classroom}

{the kids have to count the cards in order to find the next one}

{How Much is Your Name Worth?}
the kids get to
{here’s the instructions for counting pennies, nickels, & dimes in color and b/w also counting quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies in color and b/w}

{I don’t mean to name drop, but you should really check out Sarah at A Rocky Top Teacher, Nicole at All Things Apple in 2nd, Lauryn from Simply Second Grade, and Marcy from Saddle Up for 2nd Grade-without them, I couldn’t have created this blog post!}

{PS. MY REDESIGN IS IN THE MAKING…STAY TUNED :)}
