Someone always has to take the EOs 🙂 I’m the lucky one this year. I’ve got 30 little English-Only first graders in my 30 minute ELD time. Since they aren’t ELD students, I can’t teach them ELD standards! Yikes.
So I came up with a plan. Fluency. Writing. Close Reading.
I try to use every second of my 30 minutes with my little EOs.
{minutes 1-5}
FLUENCY
As SOON as we come in, we are reading from our sight word power point. It flips through all of the sight words every 3 seconds. Sometimes I start the ppt later on in the words, sometimes I start at the beginning, it just depends.
Marcy from Saddle Up For 2nd Grade has some great sight word ppts in her store.
{minutes 5-15}
FLUENCY
I’m pretty sure this is my students’ favorite time of the day.
We take out our Roll & Reads, grab a crayon, grab FOAM dice {to save my sanity}, and get right to work with our partners. This is a fun way to get the students reading and recognizing sentences as well as spelling patterns. Depending on what sound/spelling pattern we are working on as a grade level, I use that particular skill. These Roll & Reads are organized by each spelling pattern.
{minutes 15-25}
CLOSE READING
We take the last 10-15 minutes working on close reading. We LOVE using Miss DeCarbo’s Text Evidence Passages. We get a little fiction & non-fiction in the mix.
What happened to the last of the 30 minutes? Let’s be honest, we all need a little clean up time 😉
My goal for next year: more independence during ELD time if I’m still with the EOs. Maybe work in some daily 5 & learn pads when they finally come my way!
ELD is English Language Development. We are required by law to teach 30 minutes a day of ELD to students with English as a second language. We can't teach it to the English Only students, so we have to separate them into an English Only class. It's crazy.
While my ELs are out getting ELD instruction, my EOs are getting ALD (Academic Language Development). You can take it anywhere but I use HMs Curious About Words during this time.
English Only Students are those who speak English as their first language. ELD (English Language Development) is for students who don’t have English as their first language and need extra support to become fluent in English.
