Books Teachers Love: The Snowy Day
Fall has passed and it’s time for Winter! This fall holiday season flies by and soon enough it will be winter! But don’t worry, the ladies of Books Teachers Love are here to show you our most favorite winter read aloud picture books to keep your little hearts warm during the cool season. I can’t wait to show you how we use The Snowy Day in our classroom!

If this is your first time with us, please please check out the other amazing books we’ve suggested months past.
August {How Do Dinosaurs Get Mad?}
September {Please, Mr. Panda}
October {Click Clack Boo}
November {The Ugly Pumpkin}

This month I’m going with a classic: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Can you tell this is a loved little book? It’s got the name of the original teacher-owner on it and it looks like it’s been read a million times!
This is a simple story about a young boy’s day in the snow!
Here’s a YouTube video if you don’t own the book:

*sorry for the error of the name in this photo, the file has the correct name “Peter”
I love to use these simple books for narrative writing. In my class, we make a tree map to help us organize our writing. First we write about the book. What are the things that Ezra did on his snow day? Later in the week or the next week, we write our own narrative using the same idea. What would we do {or what do we do} on a snow day? My poor kids here in Southern California don’t exactly know what a snowy day is, but we discuss what we’d like to do if we had one.
If you’d like the tree map templates for FREE, click the pictures below {it includes 6 pages of tree maps for whatever level your writers are at}.
