It’s fall, it’s Halloween. It’s time for monsters. It’s time for adjectives!
A coworker reminded me of this book Go Away Big Green Monster {affiliate link}. Classic 90’s book {can’t you tell from the cover??}. I remember reading this book as a kid.
I’ve just barely touched on adjectives with our pumpkin exploration, but now it’s time to dig deep and figure these describing words out!
I read this easy fun book to my students.
We then drew the monster in the middle of a bubble map {we are a big thinking maps school}.
We went through each page of the text and wrote down all the adjectives as we went.
Next, we color coded!
As we reread for a THIRD time, we colored the part that was described and shaded in the adjectives that described it {for example: the monster had two big yellow eyes, so we colored the eyes yellow, then colored the words that described the eyes yellow too}.
We then turned this into a piece of writing. I am all about guided writing in first grade. We are ALWAYS writing because one day, they will get it 😉
Then we made our own monsters! I used A Year of Many First‘s Spooky Crafts to make these adorable monsters.
We made a bubble map to describe our monster and wrote a quick sentence “If I saw a _____ monster…”
It was all very simple, but it was an effective use of our adjectives!
We will be sprinkling some of these activities throughout our unit, check them out 🙂

How fun! I'm so bummed my school doesn't let us do monsters and Halloween….wah wah. I love how you color coded the adjectives to the parts of the monster. Great job as always! xoxox
